The flagship sedan of Lincoln Motor Company, the Lincoln Continental, has returned this year after a long hiatus.

Much has changed since its ground-breaking first generation in 1939, when it defined the luxury segment. One of the greatest improvements the model has seen over the years is safety.

Even for luxury models, safety was never given the highest priority in the early years of the automotive industry. It took until the 1950's for the modern three-point seatbelt to be invented, and longer than that before it was standard equipment in all models, and for all seating positions.

Today, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety conducts rigorous tests on new models to determine their ability to protect passengers from injury—and to avoid crashes before they occur. Only the best are crowned Top Safety Picks, and only the best of the best receive the coveted Top Safety Pick+ award.

The 2017 Lincoln Continental scored the highest marks in five crash tests, and earned the highest rating for headlights and front crash prevention technology. It joined the proud list of Top Safety Pick+ recipients for its excellence.
