To calculate a reasonable cost of ownership, the automotive insights firm examines new cars in each of the 50 states using a variety of yearly mileage rates and insurance profiles.

The 2022 Ford F-150 Lighting won the full-size half-ton pickup segment, the Ford Escape PHEV took first place in the small SUV category, and the Ford Mustang took first place in the sports car category, giving the Blue Oval a lot of recognition in the 2023 edition of Vincentric's Best Value Awards.

Vincentric evaluates the cost of ownership for almost 2,000 vehicle configurations to identify the winners of the Best Value in America Awards by adding the prices for depreciation, insurance, repairs, maintenance, financing, fuel, taxes, state fees, and opportunity costs.
The statistical models correlate the pricing and cost of ownership of the vehicles within that particular segment. The company then determines a vehicle's estimated cost of ownership. Lastly, it determines the discrepancy between a vehicle's "measured" and "anticipated" cost of ownership. The car with the estimated cost of ownership that percentages are below it has the best value in its segment.

Several electric vehicles took top honors at this year's awards, demonstrating that they can continuously represent the best value option despite having a higher initial cost.
